Or just stick some of the cheap linoleum tile on top of the wood (cut to fit) and that way the pee doesn't sit directly on the wood and soak into it.  I'm using a chin cage for my boys right now that has wood levels, and it seems to be working great so far -- knock on wood.

That cage is huge!  It looks pretty good, but have fun cleaning it.  ;D

Thanks again for all the comments people! :D
I did think about the wood...There is just the one platform and the slope that is wood. I will be coating the wood platform with something soon anyway, but by the look of things at the moment, they've decided to make to bottom floor a litter-area. Lol.
And thanks Amy, about the rusting.
I don't really see how a dog cage would rust but a rat cage wouldn't, but I believe you.
I'll just see how it goes.
If it lasts 6 months to a year then I've got a bargain. Lol.
Thanks again.

I thought that a first too but it ended up rusting badly very quick. The difference lies in where the metal was galvanied before or after welding. Wire that is galvinized after welding does not rust versus wire that is galanvised before welding that does. The large animal crates seem to be made of the rusting stuff since it is cheaper and thus they can manifacture the cage for a low enough price to sell. The hard wire cloth that you have wrapped around the cage is the nonrusting kind but it will tarnish (calcium buildup). Its possible that they have started making the creates better now a days but I would just be aware of it. The crates where never designed to house rodents long term. Other tahn that, I really liked the large door it afforded and I like how you decorated it. I am sure the girls are loving it.

For the sake of dial-up users, you really need to reduce the size of some of the pics you've posted... ideally, images posted on the forum should be in the 4" x 6" realm at 72 dpi, per forum guidelines... and they really should not be bigger than 5" x 7".

Thanks!

I would love to see the cage also, but the link to your photobucket page is asking me for your password? Is there another link to your photos that I can see please? Thanks

Well I think I've deleted those pictures from my Photobucket account, because the size was wrong.
I am not at home to the moment, however when I get back tomorrow, I will re-send them.

For Moderators:
Shall I just re-add them to this post or should I start a new post, as there is so much on here?

Here's some pics of my rats' dog cage, as people have said the last pics have been deleted. So here it is for those who are interested:
Before being set up (To show size)

With 3 adults in it

And after the platforms have been set up, with the girlies in it

It looks great. And people thought it couldn't or shouldn't be done. I bet the girls are having a ball. Too bad disassembly will kill you (cause you'd nearly have to start over) :D Great work!

once upon a time, someone joined this board who used dog crates for their rat cages here in the states. she kept complaining that one or two of her girls would get out and visit her boys. suddenly she had pregnant girls. but still she refused to modify her cages. this person simply did not want to be told that dog cages were not suitable for rat cages AS THEY ARE SOLD. i know this tainted my view when i first saw this post.

but you have obviously taken the proper precautions. no girl rat could get thru there. thank you for showing that WITH PROPER MODIFICATIONS, dog cages could be used for rat cages.

the only other thing, tho, is that it looks like you used uncoated wire and wire mesh. be prepared for it to get possibly very stinky despite being clean.

It's huge, lots of space but how do you clean it? I mean, the bars on the inside as well as the galvinized stuff must be scrubbed down right? Is that wood in the cage? Won't that get stinky awfully fast?
