I've been considering and re-considering what to do with my huge homemade cage.  When I first built the cage back in 2004, I'm not really sure what I thought the rats would be doing in the cage, since I tiled the sides and ceiling inside the cage.  Needless to say, nothing ever gets on those tiles, and they continuously like to halfly fall down.  It gets exceedingly annoying to constantly be having to push the tiles back on to the cage, when I know they're just going to come unstuck in 10 minutes  ::)  So, I have 95% of those tiles ripped off, and I just got a bunch of rollers to do the painting inside the cage.  Just for maintenance, also, I'll be re-caulking all cracks and seams.

Considering all the bright, pastel paints I have (green, blue, pink, purple, light purple, et cetera), I'm going to do each side/ceiling of the cage a different color, and then do some sort of design on top of that.  I have some fishy stencils left over from when my mother painted the bathroom, but I'm not sure if I want to use those.  Either way, although it may be a LONG stretch, I want it to be finished by tonight (or at least all work on my part -- it'll take a couple days for everything to be completely and utterly dry for me to put everyone back in the cage).  Thankfully, I have another big cage that I wasn't using, so the boys are happily in there, be it temporarily.  I'm also going to re-carpet the ramp with some bright pink carpet, so it'll make the cage pop even more  :)

Here's how it looks currently (IE -- last cage cleaning 2 days ago):

And here's what it looks like completely empty (and minus the ramp):

Just for fun, here's what I did with BunBun's room this previous winter:

I better get going, I have a long day ahead of me with all the cleaning, painting, and designing  ;)

Heck I like their cage even before you re do it.  I am sure it is going to be awesome when you get it redone.  However, I am jealous cuz I can't have a cage like that.  My bunch would have the carpeted ramp peed up and smelly in a day and I just know no matter how much sealing I do the pee would seep into the wood.  I have a Super Pets cage with the plastic shelves and the rats have those all peed up within 15 min of me cleaning it up.
Treat everyday like a dog would.  If you can't eat it or chew on it then pee on it and walk away!

Phew, all the caulking's done.  Of course, in order to get into the corners and wall/floor seams, I had to use my fingers, so that was a fun hands-on task  ::)

Honestly, I don't think I'll ever use stick-tiles again, unless I know 100% that I'm never going to remove them, or there's some sort of magical solvant that will get up the sticky residue without any problem.  I finally found something that worked enough just to get it so, when I paint, it won't look like stucco: lighter fluid.

Now, to begin the painting!  I'm both nervous and excited, since I'm sure it will come out looking amazing, but right now I'm just worried I'll mess stuff up  :P

However, I am jealous cuz I can't have a cage like that.  My bunch would have the carpeted ramp peed up and smelly in a day and I just know no matter how much sealing I do the pee would seep into the wood.

Amazingly, no one cares at all about the ramp.  No one chews it (knock on wood), no one pees on it, nothing.  I just re-carpet it about every six months because I get bored of the color  ;D  And regarding pee and the wood, I coated and re-coated (AND RE-COATED!) the wood with Kilz primer, which is water-proof and stain-proof, then stuck the tiles on, and THEN caulked everything.  The cage is pretty well sealed if you ask me  :)

I'm jealous. I'm jealous of most cages actually, I'm just finding some fun new things for my rat boys to play with.

Goo Gone works wonders! I used it when I removed the lino from my cage a few weeks ago. Can't wait to see the finished product!

I wanted to use Goo Gone, but I couldn't find the little bottle of it that I have!  Plus, in order to get the amount of sticky stuff off, I probably would have needed a lot.  Of course, now I'm going to be paranoid to ever use candles or incense in my room ever again, since I used lighter fluid to get the residue off  :yelcutelaugh:

I got the four sides (left/right) done tonight, though I'm going to have to re-paint the dark purple in a couple hours since dark colors going straight on white never come out looking perfect.  I'm painting the ceiling Tinkerbell green tomorrow, and the back sky blue.  I've yet to decide what color(s) I want to paint the square poles that help support the second level.  I'll probably do some sort of stripe effect.  :)

LOL, I was wondering about how well that cage would light up after the lighter fluid too... LOL.
And let me just add.. I LOVE BunBun's room! She's such a cutie, with a room to match!

I have pictures, and all the base coating is done, I just haven't posted them yet since I don't think it looks as good with all the paint tape  ::)  I guess I'll stop my whining, upload the pictures, and post them  ;D

Day two:

Day four/now:

It'll be so nice to remove the paint tape tomorrow.  Nice clean, crisp white lines through all the stripes.  Oh, and although you can't see it, the bottom level's ceiling is light purple.  On the sides on both levels, I'm going to do one big horizontal stripe on each, and then in the back on the first level, I'm probably going to do a big zig-zag like in Bun's room.

I also decided to make all new hammock for the 'unveiling' of the cage that will happen once everything's done.  Here are a couple I've gotten done:

The cage is done.  I went on a painting binge tonight, and somehow finished everything.  I removed the painting tape, which screwed up some spots, but I fixed them.

Looking at the pictures now, I keep thinking, "It's a carnival cage!"

I'm going to wait until this weekend to put everyone back in, just to make 100% sure that stuff is completely dry.
