Grommets?
« on: September 26, 2013, 12:17:01 PM »
I'm having a hard time figuring out the best way to install grommets in my hammocks.

Should I get grommet pliers? What are some good ones?

Where do you guys get your grommets?

I have pliers and the grommet kit you use with a hammer... I'd go with the hammer. You just have to hammer on a wood block or something. I'd avoid the pliers - I can never get them to work right. The best way would probably be the press - I'm hoping to invest in one of those soon - it cuts out trying to line everything up perfectly. But they can be kind of pricey.

I use the pliers. At first, I couldn't figure out how to use them - the instructions they came with were not helpful and my grommets never stuck. Then I found an instruction sheet for them online and finally figured them out. My rat hammock tutorials pdf has instructions for using them in the tutorial for the basic flat hammock. That said, occasionally a grommet will fall out after washing a few times - usually if I made the hole too big or if I was putting it through too many layers of fabric, and occasionally, if I don't line things up evenly, I will dent the front of the grommet when I set it.

I am planning to save for a press - not so much because I find the pliers difficult - it is second had to me now - and not because of the failure rate - most grommets set just fine - but rather because the grommets from Dritz are so ridiculously expensive. I think I would save money over time buying a press and getting grommets in bulk from grommetworld.com. It wouldn't be worth it if you don't make that many hammocks, but I am always making new sets so I think I would save money pretty quickly.

Kat - is your press like the standard one sold by grommetworld: http://grommetworld.com/standardgrommettoolcuttersandsetters.aspx or like their heavy duty one: http://grommetworld.com/grommetpress.aspx ? Or is it something different? Part of the reason I have dragged my heels on getting one is I don't know what to look for in a press.

Mine is the standard one.

For some reason they seem to breed....   I LOVE the grommet one that the 2 snap ones gave birth too :D   I don't have to really worry about where I order grommets from, though the last set I ordered would cut through hammocks so I didn't have to slit it, the latest ones I ordered don't do so well with that.   (go figure I forget where I got the other set)

kamsnaps.com has they also and I have 3 spare sets of dies for it - it's the dk.....93 http://www.kamsnaps.com/Snap-Setters/Snap-Presses-Table-Top-/DK-93-Professional-KAM-Snap-Press-Wide-Clearance-Dies-not-Included-p326.html  AND on sale right now!!!!!   I've never seen it that low!

and grommets and dies!!!   http://www.kamsnaps.com/Grommets/500-0-Grommets-with-Dies-for-DK93-Snap-Press-TESTER-Clearance-p322.html   I have size 0, 2 and 4 dies I believe if anyone gets that press at the great price and interested in other size options we can talk!
