Clever idea to turn it! I assume thats to give them more horizontal wing space?
Critter nations are so versatile, especially if you get a little creative!  :thumbsup2:

Great use of space! I love the spare ramp honeycomb hanging bridge!

Yes, some birds are climbers and need vertical space but finches are flighty and benefit from flight space over height. The CN works out to a pretty well balanced flight cage dimension-wise. The drawback is the large doors, but I have worked out ways around that by hanging "curtains" when I am working with a door open.

Thank you everyone for the compliments. I actually stole the spare ramp idea from a friend of mind, I'm not sure if they hung anything from it, but they used to make a bridge like that.

I have an older rat who's slowing down and getting the HED hippidy hop going on, and wanted to give him as much safe access to everything as I could. My rats are ADORING the bridge.

The color scheme was hapstance hahaha. Its what I had available that was clean!

My boy have become fabric chewers,  so I actually had to make some more hammocks for them and finally made a small set of the Adventure Time fabric.

I also confined them to the upper level. Mostly because I'm really lazy cleaning a whole cage, but when I manage to sew a bunch of new sets for the DCN I will open it all up again.

The girls got a cage clean today + new hammocks. Monkey theme! :)
You cant tell but theres a corner wedge that I tried to sew to look like a monkey. Since all my girls are older I dont know if they will even use the corner hammocks I put up on the left side. I put a sputnik in a spot so they could hopefully get to them easily. Popcorn is the spry one. She's the eldest but she still acts pretty young.  :)

Pancake and Mousse. (Pancake has a cataract in case you're wondering why her eye looks like that. She still gets around okay. Her other eye is her good eye but she's never had the best vision with her ruby red eyes. )

This is Mousse. I have to feed her mush so I know she's getting food. She has a hard time eating due to a tumor under her tongue. But she's still enjoying life. Especially when they get a new cage set up.

And this is my sweety baby Popcorn. She wanted attention after just 2 seconds of exploring the new cage set up. :)

Im down to just 3 ratties now. :( Ive closed the bottom of the cage off, so they just have the top part. They dont get around great so they stopped making the effort to go down to the bottom half a while ago. They used to dash back and forth up and down to stash their food. Now they just turn around and stash it behind them in the igloo. I also had to place a water bottle on the shelf level so they dont have to go all the way to the bottom (specifically for Mousse). My girls are coming up to 3 years old this year. I love them so much

Here's the top half of my DCN, the bottom was unoccupied until this weekend, and I haven't taken photos of that yet. (Its a basic set up for now, the non photo'd half. With a 3 month old neutered male, and a 4 1/2 week old male.)

Our First Critter Nation

I just got finished putting this together (and whew, what a workout! No wonder the instructions say its a two person job).

Molly's my first rattie and she'd been living in a tank when I got her, so you can see that she's racing about  checking things out. We don't have many toys yet, but we'll get there!

Congrats to you both! From a tank to a CN?! What a spoiled girl! I looks like she may now have room for a cuddle cage-mate to keep her company! ;D

Risika: cuuuute! Love the baskets. Looks like a ton of fun

Mjlamont: aw she is going to love it. All that room to run around. She won't know what to do with herself. The cage is looking good!

Michael: She is. Super spoiled. I love her, haha. And she will have one shortly! You can't see her in this pic but I've got an 8 week old rattie named Ginny in a smaller cage. We're working on socialization and letting the QT period pass by, then we'll work on putting them together! Fingers crossed that they get along. :3

Kitsch: She's been running around and leaping onto/off of the shelf all day. It's too adorable. I'm so glad I dropped the money on this cage.

keegen465, Congrats on your cage choice! It's looking fantastic. You're far more prepared than I was when I got my CN. Your monkeys are going to love it!

So, I remembered that you were hoping for a table-top cage so I peeked into the linked photo album. Are you using the cage upside-down with the shelving on the top? Brilliant! You're getting the cage where you had originally intended and you're maximizing storage space. You actually get two levels of shelving by using the cage upside-down! You should post pics here of that configuration. Vonda has posted pics of a cage on it's side for use as a flight cage but I've never seen a single used overturned as a table-top cage! Just a heads-up, though, your rats will try to pull at or gnaw on anything that is placed directly on top of the cage. Anything that is tuggable or chewable could be placed on a flat pan or something to keep them and their little teeth and fingers away. I sometimes use this behavior as a game for them by placing fleece scraps on the top of their cage.

I can't wait to see pics of your new rats  :D

Thanx Michael C! I did end up flipping it upside down. I had to zip tie the doors since they will fall off if the doors are opened all the way but otherwise it works perfectly! All of the important stuff is put on the top shelf and the top of the cage has cardboard down and then some extra cage decorations. i dont mind them nibbling at the cardboard. I ended up picking up two neutered males off Craigslist earlier today. They are super sweet and I'm so excited about them!

I'm getting a single CN and I was wondering if 3 boys would be too much? I'm getting one hairless and I haven't decided if I want 1 or 2 more in addition.

The single can hold up to 4 boys comfortably. The double can hole up to 9. (That is using 2.5 cubic feet per rat, the current standard). Three boys would be perfect in a single.

If you get a single CN with a stand, will the add on fit that if I choose to expand later?

Yes, an add-on unit will turn a single Critter Nation into a double (or a double Critter Nation into a triple).

Sorry for all the questions but I'm getting a single CN in a month from Amazon and I just want to be prepared! What are ya'lls cleaning schedules for your cage? How much daily maintenance is necessary? I'll be getting 2-3  boys

I don't recall what happened to those tunnel pieces. I found this on sale for lime $5.00 years ago. It's a perfect ramp alternative!
