any advice for how to bond with your rat? I am able to pick him up but he struggles and the only two foods he will take from me are bananas and apples

Just keep at it! :) He'll come around. Does he have another friend of the same sex? It might help him relax and not be so scared if he had a friend to be with when you can't play with him. Keep giving him his favorite treats and have him come to the cage door to get them from you. Use the treats to slowly work him onto sitting on your hand or arm by having him come to the cage door to get them, and then having him lean out out of the cage to get them more and more before he can reach the treat, until he has to step onto your hand or arm to reach it. If he lets you pick him up, you can put him on your shoulder or in a hood if you have a hoodie and walk around. Make sure to do that for twenty minutes or more when you do it, so he can get used to your scent and get comfortable on you. Good luck!
