i bought fleece today as bedding, have a few questions.
« on: October 04, 2009, 02:05:54 PM »
Since many use fleece today, and after i tried nearly every product available in stores and hating all, It's time i try it myself.
I bought quite a large amount for cheap, around 8 meters.

question is, should i make a few layers for one or one layer should be enough? the fabric is thin, so I'm not really sure.

also, I bought cat's deodorant powder, to prevent any smell. should i place a small amount only below the fleece, or i can put some on top of it as well? I'm just afraid on top of it will make my rats sneeze a lot.

I use one layer and it works just fine.  But I think most people use two.

I wouldn't put anything under the fleece. They will probably burrow under it and mess it up.

I single layer it because I am so uncoordinated and my scissors couldn't cut two layers.

I use one layer on my levels, they haven't been interested in chewing or snuggling under it so far. I do a towel then fleece over it in the bottom pan. I have to fix one corner twice a day but otherwise I have things that hold it down. It depends on your rats if they chew it or not. I would try one layer to save fabric and to see what damage they do.

Do not use powder in their cage. That is just asking for big respiratory problems. Using fleece in itself helps reduce smell because you need to change it so frequently.

I bought a few $.50 slabs of slate, I use those in the corners, they work pretty well :).
I am ratless. Someday I will own rats again.

Rats across the Bridge: Penny, Heidi, Jerry, Teddy, Lucy, Sophie, Silhouette, Jupiter, Ozy, and Rorschach. I love you all and hope we will someday meet again.

Very nice flooring! I second "no powders" :-X maybe a box of the arm and hammer refrigerator baking soda OUTSIDE of there cage will draw odors out.  I have 6 rats and find if I wipe down the levels daily I have no stink at all.  Also I have heard tha some people use the bags of activated charcoal, the type used in fish tank filters, for stink control. Again used OUTSIDE the cage.

Good luck :hyper:
