Does anybody know of a water bottle that is 100% leak free?
« on: December 31, 2009, 10:47:27 PM »
Ok, so I have 2 ferrets and a very lousy water bottle.  :( :'(
I was wondering if anybody knows of a water bottle that is 100% leak free.

I have the feeling no water bottle is truly 100% leak free.
I just got a petco brand water bottle and it actually leaked a lot less (like a drop every few mins or so), however a lot of people don't suggest their retail bottles due to the leaking problem...I must have gotten lucky with the one I got.
I have used the lixit ones (I believe that's the type, its dark and light blue) with some success. However over time with wear on the bottles they start to leak from the mouth piece thing for them to drink out of.
If you're looking for a bottle that won't leak I suggest maybe trying out different types?

Or there is a trick I have used that does sometimes (Since it doesn't always work but has for me) work, where every time you clean the water bottle, fill it as wanted, but then the twist top piece let it run under hot water then put it on. This creates a tighter seal, and takes a little more muscle to get off again later on, but for me it has reduced leaking quit a bit. However, I am sure there are some water bottle gurus on here who may have found a real non leaking water bottle. I think it is just the luck of the straw when it comes to them, since they don't always leak but mostly do at least a little.

You have to fill the water bottle completely over the rim to reduce leaking also!

Oh forgot about that fill past the rim thing...I'm just so accustomed to changing water bottles out every day I don't think of every step!

I have had an awful time with water bottles, but I found the Lixit brand to be most reliable.  I tried using the Lixit water tank (the kind where you can just open a lid and pour in more water) but my ferts didn't like it because of the peg stopper instead of the metal ball stopper.  So far, the new Lixit bottle has been working great.  I've also heard of success using water bottles intended for dog crates.

The most reliable I ever used is the Lixit glass bottles from the bird section of pet stores.

There is no winning here. Just keep an eye on them and fill them regularly.
