Most people on here are aware of what can be found in YN. For that reason, some don't use it, and since most only use it in litter boxes, it's easy to check. I use woodstove pellets. Very similar to YN with no negatives.

Interesting.  The date on that link is 2005 though.  I was not able to find anything more recent indicating it was still an issue and I've never seen any metallic bits in either the rats' or the cats' litter box--but it is something to be aware of and keep an eye out for.

hm... I've never had a problem with the stuff. I mean, vets sell it and suggest it to owners who have just had their cats declawed (not getting into the debate, just saying it all) so I'm assuming it's proven well with them too since kitties with wounds on their feet digging in litter boxes I would assume would be more dangerous than rats using it as a litter box. My mom uses the wood pellets for the cats as well as I used it when I ran out of whatever litter I was using at the time. I find the WPs stick up far more quickly and tend to just turn into sawdust when they get wet. I don't know. I find that at least YN holds form and controls smell even better. There is horror stories to every product out there though so eh.

I haven't had any problems with it or noticed any foreign objects, and I've looked at it pretty closely.  I'm still on the first bag of it and just bought a new bag the other day but haven't opened it yet.  I only use it in the litter boxes.

I quite using YN years back after getting metal shards in a bag. :-\

I feel like I recall reading that it's not even 100% paper, as well.

Yes, it also has pine wood in it.
