Rat don't use hammock!
« on: May 19, 2011, 08:26:35 PM »
It was rat room cleaning day today :-) It's a hole afternoon job :-) But it's not a job if you enjoy it *lol* :-)

But I'm looking at placing more fun stuff in the cage for the girl's to do, I'm a bit sad cause I see all these nice hammock's and I can't have one!
My rat girl's don't go near it :-(

How do I convince rat's to use hammock's?

O just a flat hammock that u get at pet store's, that has a picture of a ferret on the packaging.

I did consider maybe if I get them a sack hammock or something they might use it, but I dunno... I don't wanna waist money if they won't use the one I have.

My rats ignore those hammocks as well  :P  They're thin, not very comfortable, and boring.  I'd recommend getting a cube or pocket hammock from the pet store, or purchasing a hammock from one of the forum's vendors.  :)

Well, there's no guarantee or anything, but it's extremely common that rats don't like most store-bought hammocks, especially plain flats.  When I first got into rats, I honestly thought they hated hammocks, since the only ones I tried with them were the store-bought ones.  Then once I started sewing and made my own, they LOVED them.

Our girls lve the double decker hammocks, but not the flats. They like being cuddled between toe two layers.

Same here - I seriously have never met a rat that didn't love double deckers.  :)

5th on the double deckers.  it's the only one they don't chew.  i decided to try a new hammock layout yesterday and replaced the double decker with it, and it was shredded in the morning  ::)

To test if they're gonna like it before buying one, you can hang up a hand towel and a washcloth over it. Most of mine are old towel or unsewn, cut up fleece blankets. What can I say? I'm cheap. And they destroy anything expensive I put in. It's like they know. Oh, and mine really dislike when their hammocks are too close to the roof of the cage. Since I started connecting three sides to the wall of the cage then have the fourth attached to the ceiling via safety pin chain they seem much more likely to cuddle in them.

You can also try some other hammock styles by cutting up old sweatshirts. Make tubes from sleeves and pocket hammocks from hoods or sweatshirt pouches. Ely's favorite hammock is the hood that I hand stitched up the face on (leaving the neck opening open) then hung it off the side (with the 'face' pointed up and the neck opening vertical, like tube pouch thing). They chewed a hole in the back for their tails to hang out but otherwise they love it. You can also make pocket hammocks out of those potato microwave warmer things. Avalon loved her's until she got comfortable sleeping with the big kids.

You might want to try hiding a smelly treat, something that will attract them in a hammock (though I agree with the others that those store bought hammocks are terrible, there are lots of no sew options for making hammocks) and maybe once they're in a comfy hammock and have something yummy, they'll decide to hang out.  Even rescue rats I've had that had never seen a hammock before ended up loving them!
