URGENT Help needed!
« on: August 24, 2011, 08:24:33 PM »

Best Friend Rodent Rescue (BFRR) in Kenmore, WA is in immediate need of donations toward 17 emergency spays.

In the last few days, a hoarder dumped a huge number of rats at the door of the Tacoma Humane Society. These vulnerable rats, including a lot of tiny babies, were piled in cardboard boxes - photo here:

BFRR recently took in 80 rats from the much-publicized California hoarder incident (as seen on the TV series "Hoarders").

BFRR has now taken in another 68 rats from this new Tacoma situation.

The new Tacoma group includes about 17 breeding age females. All of them may have been with males, so this is a crisis! They could potentially produce over 200 babies. So they must be spayed urgently.

Some spay money has been raised already, but much more will be needed. We already have at least one exotics vet lined up to do some of the spays at the greatly reduced rate of $55 per spay.

Anyone donating all (or most) of the price of a spay will be considered first for adopting that rat.

If you canít afford the full spay price, donations in any amount are desperately needed.

According to Joanne from BFRR:

ďThe first dump [at Tacoma HS] was last week - there were 20 boys, 2 of whom were euthanized immediately because they came in panicky and one bit someoneÖ Thank goodness the moms didnít start biting until they arrived at our quarantine home yesterday, and got moved into their cages, or Iím sure all of the babies and moms would have been euthanized too!... I now have 68 new rats at my own quarantine home! This includes 4 sets of babies. The oldest babies appear to be about 3 weeks. Then there are 17 young ladies, one of which is obviously pregnant and all of which unfortunately could very likely be pregnant. At this point in time, we cannot afford to spay all of those girls!Ē

If all 17 females have litters it could mean another 204+ babies. It should also be noted that the 4 momís who already have babies could easily be pregnant again. In addition to the current influx, BFFR already has 105 rats in rescue, plus a number of other species.

If you can possibly help out, they have a donation button on their website here:

Or email Joanne at: joanne@bfrr.org

Obviously much more help will be needed with this rescue: foster homes, adopters, rat trains to other rescues, and donations of food and supplies.

But right now the major concern is putting a lid on the population explosion through emergency spays.

Please feel free to crosspost this information.

Is there a way to donate so it goes specifically towards the e-spay fund?

At this point any money sent to BFRR will be going specifically toward e-spays!

If you mean directly to the vet I'm sure BFRR would be perfectly happy with that! You can e-mail Joanne at BFRR directly at joanne@bfrr.org and ask her about it. I know the vet is Dr. Kamaka, but I don't know the contact info or how to handle the transaction.

I just sent $55 via Paypal and noted that it was for an espay, that should work.
