Homemade toys
« on: August 30, 2011, 08:18:13 PM »
Here are some toys I made. I only put ones that are not on other websites like dapper rat ( at least I dont think they are lol). Some I came up with others I did not.

Heres a tunnel and climbing toy. I used cardboard tubes that I got from a carpet store and cardbaord that I stripped the outer layer off.

Shelf thingy. Its just made from toilet paper/paper towel tubes, cardboard and hot glue.

This is made form wood and hot glue

This is made from toilet paper tubes, cardboard, hot glue and rope.

Some balance toys. I put these horizontally in the cage. One is just a piece of wood and the other is a tube from wrapping paper.

Some climbing toys. One is made form a paper towel tube and rope. One is made from a peice of wood and rope. The otehr is toilet paper tube and fleece.

Cargo net

Here are instructions
http://www.fancy-rats.co.uk/community/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=142593

Ladders. One is made from dowels and hot glue ( you could just buy a bird ladder. I just had some dowels lying around and wanted to make something). The other is made from rope and another toy that they didnt use. You could just use sticks.

Toilet paper tube toys. They like to chew up the one thats fanned out. The others are food toys.

Bridges. Ones made from toilet paper tubes, rope, cardboard and hot glue. The other from toilet paper tubes and yarn.

Hanging toys. These are all food toys. 2 are made from rope and egg cartons.

Heres how to make the cube one

Thanks everyone. The rats do have fun with those toys

Is hot glue safe for rats?

I did a search and people said it was safe. I got non toxic glue. The rats dont chew it anyway.

These are really cute! I'll have to try my hand at the ones that are filled with food.

Thanks for these.

Wow these are awesome! I hope you don't mind if I totally steal some of these ideas. I've got a whole stockpile of toilet paper rolls I've been dying to use and didn't know how.  :D

Steal away. Thats why I posted so people can try them for their ratties  :)

Oh and with the ones that I used cardboard that I stripped the outer layer off of I discovered if you put water on it and let it soak for a minute or so it will just peel off.

Love love love all of these!

Glad you made a post about them :wink5: I always watch your cage thread in the ferret nation section and love looking at them and getting ideas.

Yeah I have heard it is fine too. If you look at some of the small animal toys in stores as well, they use hot glue.

But on the other hand my rats find it a taste treat so the toys always fall apart that are put together with hot glue because they eat that first  lol

These look really fun! I'm in the middle of making a ratty castle out of cardboard like yours. I'm just adding as I get more boxes.  ::)

  Those are amazingly fun ideas!  I am totally trying them out!

Lately I have been moving away from baskets & plastic toys & using a lot more disposable items.  I think its good to change it up for them & I can get tons of different kinds of boxes from work. Plus it has really cut my clean up time down to not have to wash a ton of stuff each week.

So these are right up my alley right now! Thanks for posting them!

I hope your ratties enjoy the toys  :)

Here are a couple others. This was Robinkwr's idea. Its a climbing toy and slide.

Here is a climbing toy. I put the tubes alittle too close. If anyone makes it you may want to put them farther apart.

What kind of rope do you buy, and from where? I always go to the store and kind find stuff like it but the stuff I find is always so oily and smells like oil too

Those are great  inexpensive toys. To my rats every thing is a toy.  And the best toy ever is us. I wish I had the time to make craft items.
