I wS thinking of making a cuddle cup with the same beanbag idea in mind for my friend when she gets hairless rats. (She prefers them.) But yeah I'll just use the oven for safety. A few minutes on a very very low temp should do it.

I made one of those bean bag things for my old nakie girls in the past and they loved it.. for an hour until it was shredded and there was rice ALLLLL over the floor. I used a piece of jean leg and everything hoping it would be stronger. silly rats.

So many awesome hammocks, it makes me want to sew a set for my girls. I need to get a belt for my machine and purchase some patriotic cotton fabric so they can be decked out for the fourth of July.

Impressive job

Ideas for hanging-  grommet it, but I'm guessing you want to do it for cheap.  My second idea would be to sew directly the hangers to it.  Ie. using heavy thread or doubling or tripling it, sew a metal shower curtain ring to each corner. Or metal key rings, or other item to attach to cage wall

You can find metal shower rings for cheap at Walmart, amazon, or eBay.

Let us know what you do and how it works.

you could always use scraps and sew little loops on the corners for hanging too. Or ribbon or whatever.

My first few hammock sets didn't have loops or anything so I just poked paper clips in the corners. It was kind of tough stabbing the fleece, but once they were through, it worked really well. I still end up stabbing things when loops get chewed/ripped off. I need a grommet tool...

Are grommet tools expensive or something? Cause I like that idea.

I think I'll stop by hobby lobby later and see what i can find. I'll let yall know how it turns out.

I would recommend the kind that you hammer in over the pliers. I've heard they're very unreliable and some hammocks I've received that were punched with them have fallen out either quickly or over time, whereas grommets beaten in with a mallet or punched with a press are firm years later.

The kind that you hammer in with the anvil work nicely, and it's not expensive either. You can get the setting tool + 12  grommets for like $4 or $5 which I don't think is bad at all - the grommets look nice and hold up very well.

I also recommend grommet setters that you use a hammer with.
A member on here recommended the Lord and Hodge Grommet Setter http://www.amazon.com/Lord-Hodge-1073A-0-Grommet-Kits/dp/B00004Y68Y/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1339182938&sr=8-2-fkmr1 I LOVE it.  It's amazing, it makes it so easy to grommet stuff

You just need to make sure you get the right size grommet setter for whatever size grommets you use.

We use the grommet pliers.  (have tried the hammer, but don't like the idea of the hammer bashing things.)  In either case you must make sure that the grommets are already positioned through the fabric.  Neither the hammer, nor the pliers will push the grommet through the fabric.  (Please correct me if I am wrong)  My hubby does my grommet setting, so that may make the difference for why he likes the pliers.  Could the pliers require more strength?   Note, my hubby is a bit of a klutz.  It's actually scary when he is trying to cut something in the kitchen with a knife.  (He has a special glove to wear to prevent skin cutting.)  We have never had an issue with grommets coming loose.

If the pliers are used correctly, then their is no issue. Its what I use. I use them to punch a hole, but then I make the hole a tad bigger using scissors (not cutting, but just sliding the scissors through the hole and twisting) then I take the bottom piece (longer) and stick it through, apply top piece, then line the pliers up, and squeeze.

The pack of grommets I just bought has only top pieces in it. They're all the short, stout ones, and there's no longer thin ones with it. I'm very confused, but such is life and I made them work by going ahead and using them, and then using pliers to pry the metal from the middle (it hammered in weird due to being the same size) and curling it around the top edge. Gave it some extra hold. Then I hammered it down flat to make sure there were no sharp edges.

Still confused about it being only top pieces, but whatever.

I've been waiting to post these. :) I made them for the summer secret pal swap and they were received today! So... the cat's out of the bag. (And into the box. Heehee.)

The stitching isn't perfect, but it gave me a chance to test out some features of my new machine in the process. This is an 11-piece set with five flats, three double deckers, two pockets, and an open wall tunnel.

The Jenn - what sewing machine did you get?  :)

Recycled the shelf liner (bottom part in the picture) my girls chewed a hole giant in, into a rather interesting bunk bed-type hammock.  Totally thrown together, but I think they'll love it!

I actually totally splurged and got myself a machine more tailored to my quilting hobby that is going to last me the majority of my life. She's a Janome MC6600P and I love her soooo muuuuch. *__* I'll be able to learn free-motion quilting on her, in addition to better stitch-in-the-ditch because of her larger throat space, and she also has a variety of pretty stitches to make finishing hammocks a little more fun when I don't feel like zig-zag.

Got her for about half MCRP from a sewing machine dealer who'd had someone trade her in for the next best model. The machines are super popular with quilters and sell very quickly used and in such good condition, so catching that deal was really an amazing stroke of luck.

Also? That is the cutest instance of upcycling that I have ever seen!

Finally got to sew again. I managed two bunk beds, a tube-thingy, a little hanging pocket (Pete loves these), a long bunk bed (I guess?), and a flat. I know, I'm genius with names  :yelcutelaugh: Almost didn't manage anything, though - apparently sewing machines, like everything else, are made for right handed people. I was putting the thread through the needle from the left, not the right, and it kept popping out.

Ooo, a Janome!  That's awesome!  I know quilter's absolutely love them, and they're well made  :D  I have quite a few older, all-metal workhorses, but I really do want a new machine.  I returned the Singer 160 since I had some issues with it, but since then I've really been missing the fancy stitches, computerized options, and the other awesome features of a newer machine.  Definitely think another newbie is in my future  :P
