Silent Spinner
« on: August 05, 2008, 10:57:07 PM »
Hi!  Does anyone else's Silent Spinner shake and rattle so much that they want to take it down?  It isn't squeeky but is louder than the regular mesh wheel because of it rattling.  Any suggestions?

What can I use the cover the levels?
« Reply #3 on: January 11, 2009, 10:05:46 PM »
My girl rats are the messiest rats I have ever owned! I had a corner litter box and they just refuse to use it! So I set it up still under the the top level where they like to go to try and catch it but they keep knocking it over. They are in a 4 story cage and like to go to the bathroom everywhere and its causing such a mess. I used to have these green locking covers to protect the ratties feet 5 years ago but cannot find them anywhere anymore.  I was hoping to use those to cover the levels and just wash them everyweek. Does anyone have any suggestions?  The little house is gone now but that is where they like to go and it just drops all the way down and on the walls and such messy girls! There is 4 of them in there.

hey, umm, good toys and furniture for rats while they are free ranging?
« Reply #9 on: March 01, 2009, 11:08:24 PM »
Umm, I recently have started letting my rats out to do whatever the heck they want in my room (after rat proofing it) and I want to have some cool, safe games or toys.  So, any ideas?  If you have cool treat ideas too for when they come to their name, let me know, but as I made rat-safe peanut butter cookies (which Scorpious wrestled me for) I doubt that is a big problem. I am filling a ten gallon aquarium full enough for them to have fun with paper, shredded (it is taking forever to shred) and mostly paper towel, as it is softer.  Also I have paper bags... I was stringing a couple up, but they kept getting pinned close.  They have a rat hideout on top of the cage that Rayn loves, and he and Kusa go into it a lot, although Kusa spends a good amount of time playing with me!  TYheir hideout is only a big guitar hero box with a slope leading up to a large box from a heater, which I was going to make into an entrance of more fun before my mom through away all my cardboard, leaving me with only a pasta box. I can't do much on building until I get more stuff.

13 rat babies! :D Born March 2nd. 2009
« Reply #10 on: March 02, 2009, 06:19:15 PM »
The 13 babies :) I just checked. I'm pretty sure there are 8 males and 5 females. And mabey 2 pink eyed...

One of the poor babies was "rejected" by his mommy and was ice cold when i found him :( So I got him warmed up and fed him some food. I'm pretty sure he is the runt. In the pic I was double checking to make sure they were all fed and warm. The cute little guy had a little milk band, which wasn't as good as the rest but he did have food. :)

Here is the mommy before she had babies:

I was soo worried when I brought him into the vet. It wasn't the vet, it's because I heard of a lot of neuters going bad.. x.x Well, anyway, Steve made it! XD He ate like a little piggie when we got him, too! He seems to be a little out of it, but it's probably from the pain medicine they gave him.

My babies are getting fur :D
« Reply #12 on: March 02, 2009, 09:08:54 PM »
All 8 babies are still alive and healthy, despite multiple scares(The most recent one involving one of my 'unmarkeds' going missing) and today I have noticed they are getting their fur in ;D They're very fuzzyyy!

Again, can't get pics, though I'm wanting to shoot myself because of it, but here's my guesses as to colors/genders

Still at 4 boys and 4 girls...I am waiting for them to prove me wrong :P

2 fawn/amber/beige hoodeds(My previously unmarkeds. You can see little spots of color on them now) 1 boy, 1 girl. I can't tell if their eyes are going to be pink or red, though I do believe pink, which would leave me with beige or amber...My guess is beige, as they seem too light for amber

4 agouti hoodeds(2 males 2 females...The symmetry of this litter kills me) though it's hard to tell, as they all seem dark, but mom is a very dark agouti, so idk.

2 black hoodeds(1 male 1 female) these two I'm pretty sure are too dark to be anything but black.

Again, all guesses, and I can't wait to see these guys when their full coats are in :D
Girls: Riff, Aly, Suhail, Dru, Tommy, Jester, Splinter, Ellie, Annie
Boys: Pry, Raz, Kricket, Hamada, Nabila, Mulder, EJ, Jacob, Q, Felix

Tail Size/Shape?
« Reply #17 on: March 04, 2009, 09:48:41 PM »
So, I had a question (feel free to move if this is in the wrong place). I adopted a female rat last August, Lacey, and her tail is short and fat, while all my other rats and my boyfriend's rats have long and thin tails. Why is this? I heard that it was a nutrition thing, but they all get excellent food, HT and Oxbow, along with some fresh food and dried fruits. What's the deal?

Meet Little Dude!
« Reply #18 on: March 05, 2009, 02:38:37 PM »
I just picked up this boy last night from the lady who was fostering him for me while he was getting neutered and waiting for me to get him.  Here is his story, posted by his foster mommy when she got him:

Hi, my name is Mr. Tickles, but this lady calls me "Little Dude." I was bought for a 6th graders science experiment that involved all kinds of music and a maze, but once the project was finished she lost interest in me. I had a brother, but he escaped and is currently running around the horse farm some where. I was kept on the patio in a glass aquarium filled with horse shavings. My previous owner didn't have a water bottle for me, so she'd give me water in a bowl. She'd yell at me for spilling it, but I couldn't help it! There was hardly enough room for me in the cage let along a water bowl. If I want a drink, I lick the condensation off the glass.

I was given a cup to sleep in, and was fed a diet of peanuts. This afternoon I was minding my own business, an this lady plucked me out of my cage and started making me pose for pictures. That was fun I guess, but then she started screwing around in my cage and when she went to grab me I let her have it! (I made a make shift hammock to get him off the wet floor till I could get him out of there, I think I agitated him but he hasn't bitten me since, I did grab him tho thinking nothing of it LOL stupid me. So it was provoked, not his fault).

Needless to say, this boy needed rescuing!!  I am so happy I can give him a loving, forever home!  He is settling in right now, but I am hoping to take some current pictures of him.  He is shy, but comes right up to me when I open the door and I let him sniff my fingers.  I have the PERFECT buddy for him, as I believe he is pretty bored (chases his tail, barbering his front paw, eating poop) but that will wait for after QT. I think I am going to hook him up with a couple girlies in the future (I am getting two more rescues in May), his own little harem!  In the meantime, I have a very submissive boy that keeps getting his food stolen from the other ratties, and he needs a buddy too... so after QT these two boys will be introduced.

He is definitely not used to food other than lab blocks really.  I offered him a french fry yesterday and he didnt eat it!  :shocked2: .  We will just have to fix that LOL!

Looking for senior rat companion - Canton, Michigan
« Reply #19 on: March 06, 2009, 10:48:33 PM »

We have a lone 27 month male rat named George that lost his last brother.  George is very healthy and we believe he will likely live many more happy months.  George would like to find a new senior companion to share his home with.
George wanted me to mention that he has a really cool seinor loft with warm fleece blankets to hang out under while smooth Jazz plays above.  He thinks this is a great way to spend retirement but finds this lonely by himself.  George is likely to get along with a senior female companion the best.
George says the senior menu here isn't bad either, he gets lots of oatmeal and soft foods delivered several times a day.

Is there a lone senior rat out there that would like to meet George?

Reputable breeders?
« Reply #20 on: March 09, 2009, 07:07:00 PM »
I am curious if there is a listing somewhere of only good breeders, or if perhaps people could let me know who they know of. I never know what to tell people when they ask. I know of the good breeders on here, but not any of the ones who are currently breeding and NOT on here. If you're not comfortable listing your picks in public(and I can understand why this could be an issue), please PM me if it's not a bother :) Thanks!

What is wrong with kids these days?
« Reply #23 on: March 15, 2009, 05:01:06 PM »
I had my dog chained up in our yard. We live in a trailer park so we don't have a fence. I have him chained right outside my window so I can watch him and he barks when he's done doing his business.

So these neighborhood kids walk right up to him just out of reach of his chain. He starts barking at them and they run away. Then the come back and walk right up to him again.

Now my dog is an extremely well behaved dog for being only a year old. The worst he'd do to them would be to jump on them and try to give them kisses.

BUT those kids didn't know that. For all they knew he could be extremely vicious.

What is wrong with kids or rather thier parents that they don't know not to walk up to strange dogs they don't know?
I was taught never to touch or even approach animals that I didn't know. I never walk up to a person and pet thier dog without asking first. It just boggles my mind that in a trailer park full of chained up dogs and stray cats that these kids parents havn't taught them the importance of caution when it comes to strange animals.
