Have crazy hammock chewers? I may have found the solution!
« on: March 20, 2012, 11:36:46 PM »
So my girls have always destroyed any type of hammock I would put in their cage. I had some extra fabric so I made a tie hammock. I make tie blankets for my ferrets so I figured I would make little hammocks using the same technique. My girls have had them in their cage for almost a month and have not touched it. They are always sleeping in it and I am SHOCKED that its still in one piece. I just wanted to share this for any fellow "make a new hammock every other day" rat parent out there  :BlueDumboSmileTongue:

I will have to take pictures tomorrow for anyone who may be confused about what a tie hammock is.  :thumbsup2:

Ooh now I see why we didn't know what they were. People usually call those no-sew hammocks :). It's cool that they don't chew them as much! I'm trying to sell a set of no-sew hammocks and maybe knowing this people will snatch it up!

Ohhh I like that name, no sew hammocks! Good luck selling yours! They are pretty fun to make aren't they?! The only mistake I made was not buying proper scissors. My hands KILLED after making them lol!

Yeah I like making them! I find it relaxing lol. I also usually do it while i'm watching tv/movie :D
I can imagine your hands would not feel good  :-\ I have good scissors and after a while my hands started to feel uncomfortable anyway.

If you are a hard core no sew hammock maker, you can buy a round blade, looks like a pizza cutter, and the rubber safe gaurd matt for underneath the work.  It works much better than scissors and a lot faster! I used to make blankets like that.  Although my ratties do like to chew on that blanket

I made a few of those.. My only complaint is that some of the knots come undone, and I usually have to tie some back together. My rats are actually not chewers, I just hate hand sewing.

Wow, those look great! I'm ridiculously excited to try making some since my sewing skills are downright sad and I have a TON of excess fleece.

I haven't attempted a no sew hammock yet, but I'll give it a shot since it'd be quick and easy! (: I have a feeling with all of the extra fabric and ties, my youngest girl may have a field day but we'll see. They tore down a store-bought ferret hammock that had fabric loops and plastic lanyard hooks (within ten minutes of putting it in the cage!), but for some reason after I mended all of the holes, put grommets in the corners and hung it with metal rings, they have left it alone...? Now they use it like you're supposed to and my two girls adore it! xD After making the no sew, I may still reinforce with grommets and hooks JUST in case. Will post here with the results. ^^

I make these ALL the time - we call them "rasta hammocks"  :yelcutelaugh:
I do use the cutting wheel and matt.  As soon as I can get a hold of ine I am going to invest in a fringer, too (Joann's is perpetually out of stock)
With anywhere between 12 and 18 cages going at any given moment (I have most of the fosters for our rescue here), we go through a LOT of hammocks.

I love this fabric so much! If someone doesn't buy this set I won't be too disapointed (Since i'd be keeping it for myself  :cheeky:)
