The New Addition: My first hammy :)
Garavar:
I have owned many a small rodent as the daughter of a woman who can't say "no" to an injured squirrel or mouse ::) , but this is my first time with a hamster. The only interaction I have had with a hammy was a class pet in the health room, and it slept most the time.
Any who, I have been in contact with a local shelter for a while, because I wanted rats, but I soon realized that rats cost ALOT, so I shifted my want to a Winter White hammy. I won't know the gender until next Tuesday (April 3rd), so I haven't chosen a definite name yet. If its a boy, it'll probably be Alfred (Lord Alfred Tennyson ^^) or, if it's a girly, Riku or Yuna.
I hope to post pictures and keep updates on him/her when I get him/her, but until then, I have been gathering info, acquiring supplies, and generally being excited about my (almost) new pet. Anybody wishing to give advice or tell me about their hammies, feel free.
Thanks in advance,
Brandi ^^
Ryuu:
Congrats and the soon to be new addition! What kind of cage do you have for it? :)
couturepins:
Congrats! I brought home my first hamster, Rupert, from my local shelter about a month ago. He's the cutest thing ever ;D
Garavar:
Ryuu: I have a 40 or 50 gallon tank that a friend gave to me. It's pretty big (I had a heck of a time finding a stand :P) , so I hope he/she will be happy in it.
Garavar:
Okay, so this is what I have prepared for the hammy (he/she comes home tomorrow!!)
-Tank w/ hand shredded, soy-based newspaper. (machine shredded gives a chance of papercuts)
-Several hidey-holes and lots of extra bedding for burrowing
-Food dish (water bottle will be bought at shelter)
-Sanitized sticks and wood chunks for climbing/gnawing
-Plastic balls for variety (will be taken out at the first sign of being chewed on)
-Travel cage for when I visit the fam this summer in Texas and Missouri
-Extra bedding, food dish, and wood toys stowed away for travel cage
-And I am working on a play pen so he can roam around the living room floor during family time (the parrot will be safely in his cage JIC)
- I'll also be purchasing all his food and a wheel at the shelter
Sound good? I think I did quite well for never owning a hammy before, but that's just me ^^
