Let me out dance...
« on: August 10, 2012, 10:19:51 AM »
So my ferret Rebel does this totally obnoxious and annoying thing when she wants out of the cage. She digs the bars and uses her teeth to bite them. I'm worried she's going to break her teeth. What can I do to stop her from doing it? I know it's not because she's not getting enough exercise.. I'll let her out for hours and she'll get tired and go curl up somewhere and I'll put her back in the cage and boom she's awake and shaking the bars.
I've tried putting that bitter stuff on the bars to try to get her to stop biting them at least but it doesn't work.
I've no idea what to do.. any help would be great. 6am is NOT a time for shaking the bars saying "Daddy let me out!"...

Block the part it chews at most with hanging baskets, dishes or fabric maybe?
My old rabbit used to do the same thing so hard she'd break the door right off. I put a bunch of stuff in front of it and moved it when I needed to let her hop out.

I remember my boys doing this when they were bored, though my fat and lazy boy tended to do it more than his cage mates. You could try rubbing something icky on the bars such as Bitter Apple Spray or a bit of lime or lemon.

I've tried the Bitter Apple Spray and it didn't help. After I posted this I tried something. Instead of putting her in the cage when she can't run I put her in the cat (ferret) carrier (She likes it in there. If she's running around and gets tired usually she will go in there to curl up.) So I put one of her cage mates in with her. Charlie. Those two are buddies so I figured she'd be happy to have him there. She shook the door like once then went to sleep. So maybe if she is too agitated when in the cage I'll just put her in there for a while.

My girl will do this when there's no food, no water, no place to potty, or when she wants out. I had been free ranging them during the day and then keeping them in a medium sized Superpet cage at night and she would claw the cage in the morning when she was hungry/thirsty/had to use the litter box. Once we figured these things out and rearranged things (and got a Feisty Ferret), she's quit doing it. She'll dig at the floor in front of the front door of our apartment but that's cause she's nosy.

Anyways, my point is are you 100% sure she's wanting out and not needing something else? I'd would maybe try covering the cage at night too to signal bed time and taking it off when YOU want them to wake up.
