Anyone with a knack for troubled rats? (Omaha, NE)
« on: August 13, 2012, 02:18:02 AM »
The local rescue I used to get rats from closed, and my recent bunch of ladies came from petstores.
One, in particular, who I call Blonde, has never come around and has become icreasingly more aggressive with her cagemates. I've tried all sorts of things and wanted to save her from becoming snakefood, but she creates so much conflict for the others, it isn't fair to them.

So I'm hoping to find someone with more experience with problem children than I have. I have her separated from the others at night because she starts fights and I literally can't sleep for all the sqeaking. She's bigger than the others because she steals food from them, and she tries to prevent them from drinking water unless she sees me in the room. She became quite a bully.

I dunno if there is any hope for her. :( if anyone might be able to help her, shoot me a PM - thanks.

I do and would be happy to take her in, though I am not so sure that transport would be possible to Indianapolis.  If you think it's a possibility, let me know.

Do you have the funds to Spay her? it is possible that it could be linked to her hormones. SarahD has a rat from Eyohkay, that was horrible to other rats, and humans, Sarah took her in, had her spayed (I believe because she spays all her pets, not because it was thought that the issue was hormonal) and the vet said she had angry ovaries. After her spay, she tremendously changed. She now has a boy harem of her own, and Sarah can now hold her, and not be afraid of losing body parts.

Yeah, I spayed her because she was still young enough to benefit from the spay in regards to developing mammary tumors.  Finding big nasty ovaries was a bonus.

Do ratties get polycystic ovarian syndrome?  It can cause abnormally high levels of testosterone in people...just a thought.  Maybe that is what they meant?

Actully, I was there when she was spayed.  Her uterus look different that the bajillion others I have seen.  I'd compare it to a cat or dog in heat.  The uterus was abnormally red, swollen, and the ovaries were hyperactive.
