Scientific wheel running question
« on: October 17, 2012, 11:22:31 PM »
Not sure if this has been discussed here before or not.
I've only ever had boys and a few have been consistent wheel runners in their younger days although most taper off in their older years.
In my observation I have only seen them run clockwise on the wheel. Scientifically i was wondering if theres any data to support that. Similar to what they have found in the grazing patterns of cattle. Pure curiosity involved, what do your own male or female rats do?

Mine favor clockwise, but I have a couple that will switch it up every once in a while.

Clockwise, counterclockwise, one running, two running tandem, one or two running while a second or third sits on the axle...I've seen it all!  ;D

I have one particular girlie that swaps every minute or so, like she gets herself dizzy or something :yelcutelaugh:

Then the pile of babies just well, pile in and do basically what BostonRatLady said! They're such silly little things.

All my girls (3) run the wheel specifically at night-time, around 11PM (they probably also do so while I'm sleeping?) and they will swap directions every 5 minutes or so.

Tess, B'Elanna and Kileen.

Playing at the rainbow bridge:  Rattums: Astrid, Beatrix, Aeris, Gracie, Sahara, Rhyne, Echo.

If you really want to get involved in a wheel running science topic, help me figure out how to store the energy generated from my girls' running activities so that I can power my apartment! I swear they could help me save a bunch on electric!

My boys act scared of the wheel when I'm watching, but as soon as I turn off all the lights and try to sleep I hear it turning non-stop. I think they're messing with me! :BlueDumboSmileTongue:
