My boys have totally DESTROYED their favorite hammock which is a large cube (all 9 boys pile in it and they're all made their own "breathing holes" that I have to patch up weekly lol) They've finally done it in for good, no more patching up is even possible, it's basically a square tatty tent  lol.

Getting pretty cold here (Into the 40's) but because of my hyperthyroidism I'm very sensitive to heat so the temp's are normally around the 55-60 range in my room (where the rat's are kept) so I have been trying to find things extra cozy AND durable for the boys(and girls!). I just kind of slapped this together, there's a few things that I've already noted will need to be changed, but i'm pretty sure this is going to last a LONG while as far as hammocks go. The actually hammock itself is stuffed, stitched in a 9-square quilt. Then I sewed in 1-2" strips of flannel/fleece/jersey knit/other comfy fabrics over the whole top, then sewed in a border around two sides for a little extra support.  It can be hung as a hammock, a tube, or a sling. The tube is so, SO warm and soft when hung scraps side in.

I'm going to work on a second one now that should look a lot more professional (more or less this was just made to see how it holds up and not to look pretty, lol!), and if anyone wants me to make a video of how to make it (you WILL need a machine for this!) I would be happy to oblige! It took me nearly an hour to finish it though, all those little bits of fabric had to be cut and sewed on  and I had a LOT of rows to do since it's a decently large hammock!

Lets see how long it lasts with my group of demonic chewers...  :help:

That is an AWESOME idea for a hammock for chewers (or even non-chewers that you want an extra cozy hammock for)!  I've definitely found that providing fleece scraps in a basket hung on the side of the cage, along with some scraps inside any cubes and some scattered in/on a few other hammocks greatly reduces the amount of chewing/shredding done to the hammocks--not sure exactly why, they don't appear to be shredding the scraps all that much but whatever, it works for me.  But having some actually sewn to a hammock is genius, especially since loose fleece scraps end up spread all over the cage very quickly (or one rat decides they belong in the food bowl, which he then proceeds to empty of every bit of food and fill with as many scraps as possible, topping it off with one of the cat balls w/bell inside that he likes to play with.  Every time).  I agree that your new hammock should last a LONG time!

I agree!

I have several baskets with fleece/flannel scraps in them too and the rats would just make HUGE messes with it. I didn't mind too much but it got tiresome to keep cleaning out fleece piles mingled with food and litter and dried poops. I'm sure this is still going to end up with dry poops and food in it, but it'll wash pretty much perfectly I think, and even if the rats chew it it shouldn't be a problem since it's going to be very, very hard to chew a hole into this (it's stuffed pretty thickly but the pictures don't do it justice lol). I actually came up with this because of this exact problem with the loose scraps!

I'm thinking of trying to make a cube with it if I can manage it.  I can already see the 7+ hours for just making ONE hammock lol.

Omg I love this. I always stick to colder temps as well as I can't stand the heat and my rats are in my room too. Wish I had a machine to make this, sadly I hand sew. Guess my rats will have to suffice till I can get that machine I've been eyeing lol I just give them lots of paper and fleece to nest with and they all pile in together. Anyway this is seriously cute, awesome and looks super warm and cozy. Great job!  :thumbsup2:

Well if I can get some spare time I would be happy to make a few of these for those of you without machines. They're all used materials so I wouldn't ask anything but shipping for them (Which I think is less than $1.50?)

I caught four boys in it this morning but scared two away with the camera.  :yelcutelaugh: I've never seen them in any hammock but the cube so I think this might be a big hit!

 ;D So cute...

If anyone wants one of these hammocks PLEASE PM ME! (or post!) I am going to make five standard flats with my stronger design, and want a few people with rats as testers. The more your rats chew the better!  :thumbsup2:
They will be free, I just ask for shipping which should be just at or under $3.50.  :) They will be made of upcycled (but clean!) materials. Fleece, flannel, etc.

Great!

I'll post up a picture of them tonight and you guys can pick out the ones you want. They're all pretty much going to look the same (lol!) but i'll try to match up colors at least.

Introducing..color-coordinated! LOL!  ;D I made this one for my own girlies (sorry testers! more on the way!) and it shows the more improved design. This baby is tougher, less lumpy, and 10000% more plush! :yelcutelaugh: Instead of stuffing with scraps I went ahead and use poly plush on the inside of the hammock. I used only fleece and flannels for this one, instead of a lot of different fabrics.
This baby is about 1/4" thick, not including scraps! Then I increased the length of the scraps by 1", but they're just a little long, so I'm going to reduce them back to 2" on the next ones as that seems to be the perfect length.  The ribbons are quadruple sewn and then stitched one more times for durability.  :thumbsup2: I think this one will last for sure.

I'm nearly out of fabric actually (These take a lot more than you'd expect!) so I'm going to have to reduce the amount to only 3 testers, so there's only one more tester spot open! I will make a pink one, a blue one, and a "gender-neutral" one. first come first serve so pick your color now, testers!

Don't you just hate when you bend a needle?!  >:(

This one came out pretty cute and soft. I almost want to keep it but it doesn't match me cage (not that anything really matches in my cage...)

It's available to a tester.  :)

I think I have all slots filled, but not sure. For sure I have one slot filled. The pink one is possibly taken too, just waiting on a reply. I'm trying to figure out a name for these guys and I've gotten tied between waffle hammocks and sweeper hammocks...But Waffle hammocks sounds pretty cute aha.  :cheeky:

The blue one isn't taken so the first person who is for sure they want it, it is 8x8 roughly, please PM me so I can PM you my paypal for shipping.  :thumbsup2:
