Rat with swollen injured leg! HELP?
« on: October 27, 2012, 10:14:33 AM »
My friend and I just bought some baby rats about 2 weeks ago that we're about 6 weeks old. My friend was visiting me when we found them and its about a 13 hour drive to take her home, so we were a little worried about her 2 traveling for that long. Even though we were really nervous about it, we had no other choice. They seemed to have taken the ride well, since they were sleeping most of the drive anyway. It's been a few days since we got home, and a couple things have happened. Her blue rat showed signs of heavy stress, with the red tinged liquid discharge coming from his nose. So we cleaned it with a warm rag and let him back in his cage to rest. This morning we woke up to him having a wound on his leg and its swollen. She just tried some warm salt water and will do cold water soon, to see if it helps the swelling. Is there anything else we should try? She is already pretty attached to him and doesn't want to see him die.. He seems to be pretty normal behavior wise, just a lot slower he is usually hyper and all over the place, so now is taking it easy and cuddling her. What are some things we should try? I appritiate any answers to be given! Thank you.

The injury, as well lit as i could get without irritating him. The vet visit is set for tomarrow morning and we are praying he makes it through the night. please help!

Im guessing this is from having to hold his foot up, but keep in mind the happened sometime last night to early this morning. it swelled fairly quickly.

His back is very arched...

His back may be arched because he can't put his wieght on the leg. I wouldn't panic too much try to get some infant ibprophen to help the pain and that's really all you can do till you get him into the vet. It looks very swollen I wonder if it's a break.

(I am the owner of Bleu)

I luckily found some infant pain killer, so I gave him a drop of it. I wasn't sure how much to give him, so I thought a drop would be a good start. Thank you for the help!!!

I read the bottle, and it says its 160mg per 5ml.. and since I only gave him a single drop, should i give him more later? and how often? he is still very young, and im nervous to OD him.. I read elsewhere rats can have 15-60mg/lb of pain killers like ibuprofen, but because i dont know how much he weighs, i dont know how much to give him!

Do you have a kitchen scale that you can wiegh him on, that will give you a better idea of how much you should give him. It is pretty hard to OD them on it from what I understand. It should be given every six hours I believe unless the pain lets up.

We have one somewhere, but we cant seem to find it! Should I just continue to give him just a drop then until we find it?

The likelihood of him passing from a wound like that in that short of a time are slim. Was something else going on with him? Any sneezing or sniffling, wheezling, crackling, any noises at all? I'd keep an eye on the other rats.

RattieMama and I brought these little boys home from Maryland on a 14 hour drive. I'm sure the stress of that alone was a facter though we took many precautions to avoid it. I read a post here early today about a female named stormy who passed rather quickly from what looked to be very similar. We're still unsure what exactly caused it but he feel out so quickly... I doubt even the vet could have done a thing for him. We will contine to research his death and pos something when we find out exactly what happened to help others with this issue in the future.

I don't think it was the drive. There are rescues here who've received  (And I myself have received) rats after roadtrips that were much longer than 14 hours. The community does a lot of rat trains, transporting rescue rats across multiple states by car, and I've never heard of them losing any to stress due to the ride. My past rats never cared about car rides.

You definitely likely have something else going on. There isn't anything that can be done about it now, but I'd make sure you have an exptics vet on standby, read up on common rattie illnesses, and make sure you keep an eye on the other bubs.

Its not that we believed the ride alone is what killed him, but the stress levels he must of had made anythig he had worse. He had (i forget how to spell it) the red tinged liquids coming from his nose as he sneezed. There are 2 reasons we didnt believe it was this serious. 1) Livis blind rat had this, and is still going strong. 2) I read somewhere stress could cause this, so of course after that car ride, thats what I assumed it was from. I left them be so he could calm down. Next morning, this is how we found him.  It all hit him at once. I feel like I didnt do my job to keep him safe.. i didnt take it all seriously.. and I lost one of the best rats I ever had.

He and his brothers (the 2 blue babies Livi has at home) all sneezed when we first got them, so the sneezing here didnt surprise me, just the discharge. I wiped it away with a warm rag everytime I noticed some on his nose.
The only things I could think that make sense to kill him are a URI, or Shock..
His cage mate Copper seems fine by all means, no sneezing, still shy and skiddish, eating, and drinking. But I will keep my eye on him!
I dont know what I did wrong, but I feel terrible. I also feel terrible Copper is left alone now. Me and Livi were going over what could of happened.. Is it possible Bleu & Copper played too rough, and Copper did that to him and got him sick? Should I be worried to get Copper a new cage mate?

If I should get him another cage mate (since I knew you should never have just 1 rat) Do any of you know of GOOD breeders/rattery sites I could check out? I dont FULLY trust the stores around here, since I have seen sick rats at their stores. Im looking to get one from a good breeder this time. Maybe it will make a big difference.

Should I attempt to get one about the same age as Copper? I used to have a female (Molly) who 'bullied' a slightly younger rat I had gotten (Mina) which made her eventually bite me.. and this was SHORTLY before I got Bleu&Copper. I had to give them up, since I couldnt trust them. I was hoping boys would make a difference, and this happened ): Ugh. i just need as much advice possible right now! Im so confused.
