Can you give ferrets ivermectin?
« on: June 10, 2013, 01:59:22 PM »
My rats have mites once again.... They are starting to itch frequently and one of them has a couple of red scabs.

My ferrets are also very itchy and one has a few red scabs on her belly. I didn't think it was possible that ferrets could get mites from rats, though is it?

I'm going to the tractor and supply store to get ivermectin and I'm wondering if it's okay to give it to my ferrets as well as my rats.

If so, what would be the proper dosage for my ferrets?

Thanks.

I don't think you can. Not orally at least. What I'm reading is that an injection is acceptable or massaging it into their ears but it sounds like you're describing a skin infestation rather than an ear one.

This has some information on mites and ferrets.

Are you sure the ferrets don't have fleas? Fleas you can see, mites you cannot.

I don't see any fleas or flea eggs on them,so I don't think it's that.

Though, they've stopped itching so much. It's more like every once in awhile they will start scratching at themselves.

Though, I have no idea what it is. Do you think it could be the same as what my rats have?

Hmm, I couldn't find any evidence of mites passing between rats and ferrets.

Ferrets are just itchy animals too. Mine scratch all the time even though they have no fleas/mites and they get baths rarely. If you're bathing often, it could be drying their skin out and making them itchier. Could you get a picture of the scabs by chance?

I may have just been overreacting... They don't itch that much and Marilyn's scabs went away. Thanks.
