Question regarding raw feeding.
« on: February 21, 2014, 09:40:06 PM »
Maybe there is the most obvious answer to the question but so far I haven't been able to solve this mystery, in the past I was beginning a switch to raw with a mentor from Holistic Ferret but after my girls passed away I never saw the need to continue and therefore didn't graduate.

My question is when people talk about feeding 80% base meat 10% bone and say 10% organ what exactly are they referring to? Is it
your ferrets body weight divided by 10% or how does the measuring work, In the past I used to just wing it but we were only just starting out so they were allowed to eat as much as they pleased.  ??? ??? ???

They're talking about the contents of the meal. Kind of like how you should have X% of veggies a day, or whatever. I always imagine it like dividing a plate up into 10 slices and one slice is organ, one slice is bone, and the other 8 are muscle meat. lol.

I'd definitely recomend getting back with a mentor if you're going to raw feed though. I'm a kibble feeder and have research raw feeding but there are so many nuances with it.

Hey mute, would brand of kibble do you use? or do you use multiple?

I feed a 50/50 ratio of Orijen cat & kitten and Wellness Core Kitten.
I like to feed multiple just in case of a manufactuer issue, which happened with me and Innova (big salmonella outbreak).

I feed raw. Kibble is way too expensive with 40 ferrets lol

Weekly balance is easier than daily. I suggest going back to Holistic Ferrets & reading back up on raw feeding. The percentages relate to their weekly dietary needs. I'll use my diet to example (keeping in mind, my ferrets require a higher bone content of 15%)

Monday: ground red meat, beef hearts, liver & kidney
Tuesday: chicken carcasses
Wednesday: Chicken carcasses
Thursday: ground red meat, beef hearts, liver & kidney
Friday: Chicken carcasses
Saturday: Chicken carcasses.
Sunday: whole prey (birds, rabbits, etc)

Always good to work out a staple food that you can get easily & cheaply (mine is chicken carcasses), then add on top your necessary components (hearts, liver & other organs; eg kidney), then add in more variety.
