Penny: 2010-22/4/14

Penny was my adorable African Pygmy Hedgehog. I'm kind of impatient but I waited at least year for Penny.
I won't say she was the friendliest pet ever- in fact, most of the time when I spoke about her I called her a huff or said she was miserable! I don't feel terribly bad about that now- she was not interested in humans!
I took her in as a rescue. I don't know her whole background but judging by the people I collected her from she wasn't socialised well at all. Unfortunately hedgehogs don't seem to be as forgiving as rats and despite lots of handling she never really got used to us, except when Mark gave her treats. Then she was all over him  :yelcutelaugh:
Having said that, she was always very fascinating. I took her to schools a few times and the children and stuff loved her and her huffy personality- they thought it was very funny when she would huff and curl up into a ball. I always loved the adorable way she would try and jab us with her headspikes!
Unfortunately, over the last couple of months I had noticed a decline in Penny's activity. It was pretty chilly round here so I thought she was attempting to hibernate. She was also getting to be an old lady at this point so I just kept an eye on her.
Then I noticed that her eye had swollen and was leaky. She had a cut underneath which I believed she had caused by scratching and thus infected her eye. I took her into the vets expecting to just be given a course of antibiotics and it would clear up but unfortunately it was discovered that she had a brain tumour which had grown into her mouth and across her eye. It was inoperable.
The vet was inclined to euthanise that day but I had seen Penny running around and eating just fine so I decided to give her some more time. He gave me some antibiotics and pain relief to keep her going and from then I saw her becoming more active. I guess the tumour must have been causing her a lot of pain. With the added pain relief, in her final couple of weeks she was running in her wheel and eating more mealworms than she should- I bet she thought all her birthdays had come at once!
The last couple of days however she took a turn for the worse- she just slept all day and wouldn't get up to eat food from her bowl. If she did stand she was very wobbly and she was breathing out bloody mucus from her nose. I knew it had to be time now so on her last night she got about 50 mealworms (all of which she ate!) and I took her in to be euthanised this afternoon.
I've never had a pet put to sleep before and it was all a bit strange. I managed to get a few minutes to cuddle with her but I totally forgot to say 'goodbye Penny' before she was taken.
I hope she forgives me and knows that even though I called her huffy she is greatly missed and I'm saying goodbye now.
Rest in peace, Penny and may your ails be gone.

A few final snaps of our last afternoon together
