Suggestions on how to clean river rocks
« on: July 30, 2016, 09:15:03 PM »
So I got a couple of river rocks for my boys to use as pee rocks. The thing is I got them out of the Juniata River(in-laws have a campsite there) and they're half covered in moss. What would be the best way to remove the moss and disinfect the rocks, so it's to give to the ratties?

I would boil them for 15 mins. It will kills any germs and get the moss off of them.

Scrub them.  Sit them in bleach for an hour or so.  Rinse them and set them in the sun for a couple of days.  (Sunlight breaks down the bleach)

Or

Boil them for at least 10 minutes.

Or

Soak them in peroxide and rinse

Obviously use a scrub brush and soap to get the moss off first.  I'm kinda a nut about this sort of thing (even though I let my rats run in the grass outside which makes no sense) so I usually do 2 different cleaning methods.
