Limping Rat
« on: December 13, 2016, 09:32:52 AM »
So while I was cleaning out the rat cage today I noticed that Pasquale is limping. I got him out and checked him over. He's favoring his back right leg. He's only slightly more annoyed if I mess with it compared to the other back leg. Meaning he pulls it away from me quicker. Other than that I didn't notice anything wrong. He was still being his active self, checking out what I was doing and grabbing the paper towels I was trying to use. Do you think he just pulled a muscle?

Sounds like a pulled muscle or twisted ankle.  As long as it doesn't start swelling like crazy, I'd just leave it alone since he is active.  If anything changes as far as his activity level, eating, or if it swells; then I'd get it checked.

I've had that happen to rats before. It always went away quickly.
I'd make the enviroment more conducive to healing by making it softer. Maybe keep him on 1 floor with nothing but soft fleeece to walk on.

If it doesn't get better within a couple of days then it might be HED.

Even if the foot were broken, there would be little that could be done for it, so don't worry, Pasquale will be over it soon.  I'd be seems to be in real pain, you could give him ibuprofen, or ask your vet for some Metacam.  But it sounds like a sprain that should heal quickly.

Metacam works wonders. Pyp went through a daredevil phase for a few months where it seemed like every month he was injuring a leg. The first time we went to the vet, we got x-rays (I argued against this because it's not like you can splint a rat's leg, but whatever) and were sent home with metacam for a probable sprain (no break). The second time, I just called the vet and asked for a refill, but his leg looked much more swollen and was much worse than before, so I think it was actually broken the second time. It took longer to heal this time too. Metacam worked wonders and made him feel better while it was healing up. He hasn't pulled any stunts lately, so I'm hoping he's over this phase  :yelcutelaugh:
